Of the 482,215 home parcels in our drive-time table, 124,525 are within a 30-minute drive of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. That is 25.8 percent, about one in four. Of those, 109,879 are also within 10 minutes of an H-E-B. The other 14,646 are close to the runway and farther from the grocery store.
Two errands decide a lot of weeks in a house: the one you do every few days and the one you do before a flight. This piece puts both on the same map, county by county and then ZIP by ZIP, so you can see where a short airport run and a short grocery run line up, and where they do not.
How we measured it
Austin Local Team keeps a table of modeled drive times from home parcels in the Travis, Williamson, Hays, Bastrop and Caldwell appraisal districts to a set of destinations. It is built on an OpenStreetMap road snapshot dated October 13, 2026 (table built October 14). The times are free-flow: no traffic, no construction, no stoplights backed up, no tolls. Read each number as the best case.
The airport is one point in the model, not the terminal curb, a parking garage or the rental car center. The grocery figure is the table's nearest-H-E-B field. We did not check its store list against H-E-B's own, so a very new or recently closed store could be missing. We are not rating any store, only measuring distance.
By county
| County (parcels) | Median to airport | Within 30 min of airport | Median to H-E-B | Within 10 min of H-E-B |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Travis (268,202) | 31.0 | 45.6% | 5.5 | 84.3% |
| Williamson (144,955) | 47.5 | 0.0% | 5.9 | 84.7% |
| Hays (46,458) | 40.6 | 1.8% | 8.0 | 70.9% |
| Bastrop (17,243) | 42.6 | 6.6% | 12.1 | 39.1% |
| Caldwell (5,357) | 35.8 | 6.4% | 6.2 | 59.6% |
| All five (482,215) | 38.3 | 25.8% | 5.9 | 81.2% |
The grocery column is the flat one. In Travis and Williamson counties, more than 84 percent of home parcels are within 10 minutes of an H-E-B. The airport column is not flat at all. The median Travis County parcel is 31.0 minutes out, the median Williamson County parcel is 47.5, and in our model no Williamson County parcel is inside 30 minutes. In Bastrop County, 38.8 percent of parcels are more than 15 minutes from an H-E-B, against 6.7 percent in Travis.
By ZIP code
ZIP codes are mailing areas, not neighborhoods, and the medians below describe the parcels in them, nothing about the people. We show ZIPs with at least 1,500 home parcels in the table.
| ZIP (parcels) | Median to airport | Median to H-E-B | Within 10 min of H-E-B |
|---|---|---|---|
| 78741 (2,432) | 17.5 | 5.1 | 100% |
| 78744 (10,139) | 18.6 | 7.4 | 77% |
| 78702 (3,986) | 20.2 | 3.3 | 100% |
| 78725 (2,127) | 22.8 | 16.2 | 16% |
| 78704 (6,381) | 23.3 | 3.8 | 100% |
| 78724 (4,395) | 24.1 | 9.9 | 52% |
| 78745 (11,064) | 24.9 | 4.6 | 100% |
| 78754 (6,018) | 30.2 | 9.3 | 69% |
| 78759 (7,909) | 35.3 | 5.7 | 100% |
| 78750 (6,032) | 39.8 | 7.6 | 83% |
| 78732 (4,089) | 51.6 | 10.6 | 43% |
Most of the Austin ZIPs near the airport also sit near a store. 78741, 78702, 78704 and 78745 are inside 25 minutes of the airport and round to 100 percent of parcels within 10 minutes of an H-E-B. The exception in this list is 78725, in far east Travis County: a 22.8-minute median to the airport, and a 16.2-minute median to the nearest H-E-B, the longest grocery drive of any ZIP we show. Only 16 percent of its parcels are within 10 minutes of one. The ZIPs at the bottom of the airport column, such as 78732, are the reverse in distance terms: far from the airport and moderately far from a store.
A related pattern from a different angle: 78744, the ZIP with the second-shortest airport drive, is also the one where we looked at flood insurance policy counts earlier this month. Proximity to a runway says nothing about the other records on a parcel. Check them separately.
What is changing at the airport
Austin-Bergstrom broke ground on Concourse M on September 29, 2026, according to Construction Equipment Guide, citing KXAN: a six-gate west-side concourse, $64 million, with a target opening as early as 2028. It adds gate capacity while the main terminal's gates are remodeled and a 26-gate Concourse B is built. The article says nothing about changes to roads or parking, and we did not find an official statement that does, so we make no claim that your drive to the terminal will change.
What this means if you're moving here
- Decide which trip you make more. If someone in the household flies every week, the airport column matters more than the grocery column. If nobody does, a 35-minute airport drive is a few times a year.
- Do not read a median as your address. A ZIP with a 24-minute median still has parcels at 15 and at 33. Put the exact address into a maps app and drive it at the hour you would.
- Add the traffic back. Our times assume an empty road. Early flights and late arrivals are the easy case; a midday trip on a congested highway is not.
- Check the other records for the same parcel. Flood, tax rate and district records live in different places from drive times. Our neighborhood pages pull several of them together.
- Look at the county line. Williamson County parcels in our table are 47.5 minutes from the airport at the median, but 17.9 minutes from Dell's Round Rock campus in our employer drive-time piece. Where you work changes which map to use.
What this data cannot say
- It is modeled, not measured. No traffic, tolls or construction. Our report on Census commute data covers how people actually travel to work.
- One point per destination. The airport point is not a terminal, a garage or a drop-off lane.
- Parcels are not households. A parcel can hold one house or several units.
- The store list is the table's. It is not an up-to-the-day list of H-E-B locations, and other grocers are not counted.
